Earlier Tonight in Carolina, it was a meaningless game between the Habs and Hurricanes, as both teams sit out of a playoff spot. The Habs are 15th in the East and the Hurricanes are 12th in the East. 5 minutes into the second, Blake Geoffrion scored on a rap-around for his 2nd goals of the season. 5 minutes later, LaRose would tie the game on a powerplay. This game would go to a shootout. Eric Staal scored the laon goal in the shootout as the Hurricanes win 2-1. In the win, Cam Ward made 30 saves. In the loss, Peter Budaj made 28 saves."Everyone's going to ask me about using (Staal) and I just thought it was fitting, the way he played in the second half, it was great to see him be the final shooter and score the final goal," said Carolina coach Kirk Muller.

The Canadiens coach had this to say about the loss: "There was a lot of desperation in our play," interim Canadiens coach Randy Cunneyworth said. "We were under the gun, under fire, and there's desperation in the box and getting in the way of some mean shots." The Habs will close out their season on Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
