Today in Boston, the NHL announced that they have suspended Rome for 4 games for a hit to the head on Horton in the first period of Game 3 of the Cup Final. Horton past centre ice and dumped the puck in and a short time later was nailed by Rome and left the game with a Concusion that will keep him out for the rest of the final's."Two factors were considered in reaching this decision," said NHL senior vice president of hockey operations Mike Murphy in a statement. "The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury."
This is a bad call by the NHL. Lets look back at the NHL's non suspension hits to the head. Back in 2009, Matt Cooke of the Penguins gave an elbow to the head of Bruins forward Marc Savard and was not suspended. In the Winter classic of 2011, Steckel of the Capitals nailed Crosby of the Penguins in the head while skating by and no suspension. March 2011, Chara of the Bruins nailed Pacioretty into the turnbuckle with no puck in sight. No suspension. So why did they call this play a suspension? The way they looked at it was, Horton's a star on Boston and if he's out, so should Rome. Bad call NHL. If your not going to suspended all the blind side hits to the head, then don't suspended any.
