KOIVU WILL NOT BE BACK NEXT SEASON WITH MONTREAL; MORE NEWS ON KOVALEV
This afternoon in Montreal, Canadiens GM Bob Gainey told Canadiens captain Saku Koivu that he will not be re-signed.Koivu was drafted 21st overall in round 1 of the 1993 NHL entry draft. Koivu played 13 seasons with Montreal (11 seasons as Habs captain). In those seasons he had 191 goals and 450 assist for a total of 641 points with Montreal.“I had good conversation with Saku on Wednesday morning and I thanked him for everything. He was tremendous for us for a very long time, a special player,” said Gainey. “I have great memories of his time here and Saku was a great player for us. The time came for us as an organization to move on, create a new team with a new identity.”
So the big question is who will be the Habs next captain? It could be Kovalev if he re-signs with Montreal. Gainey talked about Kovalev today.“Both sides were interested in having Alex come back to Montreal, but we couldn’t come to terms in time,” said Gainey who had to move quickly as players were being signed in a hurry. “As it stands now, this would mark the end for Alex with the Canadiens.”
