With former Canadiens captain Saku Koivu signing with the Ducks Canadiens coach Jacques Martin say's he's in no rush for a new Captain."You have to develop your own leadership. You look at the players who have left and it's probably the core of the leadership that ran this team the last couple of years," Martin said. "You look at captain Saku Koivu and you look at Alex Kovalev," Martin said."If nobody emerges as a captain, that's not an issue for me."
When Jacques Martin was asked if he liked what Canadiens GM Bob Gainey did so far, and if he thinks the team is a contender he reasponded: "I think we can develop competition within the team," he said. "What I like about the new players is that we've acquired players who have won the Cup in recent years. Guys like Gionta, Gomez, Hal Gill. They'll provide some leadership." So now lets be the one to decided of that in October based on the team's performance.
