2012 NHL Draft Lottery Standings Update (April 1st)
Injury Update: CAREY PRICE IS SIDELINED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON
Today in Montreal, RDS doctor David Mulder announced that Carey Price will miss the remainder of the season with a Concussion. Price has a 26-28-11 record in 65 games in a season where the Habs sit 15th in the East and 28th overall. Price apparently suffered his concussion some time last week. Price went ahead and played Friday nights game against the Rangers injured. That explains they 2 soft goals that Price gave up in that 4-1 loss. In other injury news, both Tomas Kaberle (Lower Body) and Travis Moen (Upper Body) are day-to-day and they both have potential to play in Wednesday nights game against the Lightning.“I’m still waiting to see, but the plan is to get in at least a game or a couple of games before the season’s over,” stated Travis Moen. “I’m feeling better so it’s just day-to-day at this point and I’m just waiting to get the okay from the doctors and get back in. It’s never easy to miss games and sit on the side and watch the team play so it will be good to get back in and try to help the team."
Kaberle also spoke about his possible return. “I hope I’ll be able to play. We’ll have to see how it goes over the next couple of days and I still have to talk to the doctors, but we’ll see again on Wednesday morning,” explained Kaberle, currently nursing an upper-body injury of his own. “I would have liked to play over the weekend, but sometimes plans like that just don’t work out. It was the coaches and the doctors’ decision. I haven’t been cleared to play in a game yet, but at least I’m cleared to practice.” Matthieu Darche expects to return from his upper-body injury sometime this week. As for Captain Brian Gionta, he will remain out with his bicep injury for the last 3 games.

HABS COME BACK DOWN 2-0 BUT FALL IN THE SHOOTOUT

Last night in Washington, the Capitals were going into the game against the Habs tied for 8th in the East with the Buffalo Sabres (at 86 points). So the Habs job in this game was to play spoilers and try to prevent the Caps from leapfrogging over the Sabres. Just 5 minutes in, Semins shot was blocked but he got the rebound and centred the puck right to Perreault and he scored to make it 1-0 Capitals lead. Then with under 4 minutes to play in the first, Hendricks came up the left wing and centred the puck right to Beagle and he tipped the pass past Budaj and in to make it 2-0 Capitals lead. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the first, Pacioretty came flying down the left wing and fired a shot and it was stopped by Neuvirth but Cole scored on the rebound to cut the lead to 1.
Late in the second, Plekanec skated up the right wing and deked his way past former Canadien Roman Hamirlik and then he roofed the shot over the glove of Neuvirth to tie the game. This game would go to a shootout. Hendricks was up first for the Capitals and he scored. Desharnais and Pacioretty would both miss for the Habs. Ovechkin also missed for the Capitals. But the Caps third shooter, Alex Semin had a chance to win the game and he did. The Capitals win 3-2 and now have 88 points and sit 2 points up on the Sabres for 8th in the East. In the win, Neuvirth made 39 saves and he really won this game for the Capitals.
"The guys worked hard tonight and they deserved maybe a better fate," Montreal coach Randy Cunneyworth said. "We certainly crawled out of the deficit we had and the first goal (by Cole) was a big one, obviously turning the game around for us and getting us going in the right direction. ... I liked the effort overall."In the loss, Budaj made 31 saves. With this shootout loss the Habs shootout record continues to be the demise of what eliminated them from Playoff contention as they have 5 shootout wins and 11 shootout losses. If the Habs were to win at least 70% of the shootouts this season they would be in the playoff race.

RANGERS GRAB WIN # 50 WITH A 4-1 WIN ; THE HABS AWFUL SEASON CONTINUES

Last night on Broadway, the best team in the East (Rangers) took on the worst team in the East (Canadiens). 9 minutes in, Marian Gaborik scored from the slot to make it 1-0 Rangers. 30 seconds into the second, Richards fired a shot from the top of the right circle and it beat Price to make it 2-0 Rangers. That was a powerplay goal. 8 minutes later, the Rangers grabbed another powerplay goal with a goal from Del Zotto from the point. He would add another to make it 4-0. But late in the third, Bourque would score on a rebound for his first goal in 16 games to cut the lead to 3 but that's as close as they came as the Habs lost 4-1 and the Rangers picked up win number 50 on the season.
"I didn't even know tonight was 50," Del Zotto said. "Knowing now, it's great but it's not something we're going to be satisfied with. We want to keep moving forward. We'd like to win the rest of our games.We know we're at the top of the standings, but it's not something we're really that focused on. We just want to peak come playoff time and get all the kinks out of our game." In the loss, Price made 25 saves. In the win, Lundqvist made 19 saves. After the game, Tortorella spoke about getting to 50 wins. "It doesn't mean squat. I will tell you right now it means absolutely nothing," New York coach John Tortorella said.
"It's about how we're playing as we go through these next four games against tough opponents. It's about our game going into the playoffs. You get measured by the playoffs." The Habs have 4 games to go on what has been a awful season. Over the course of the season, the Habs fired an assistant coach in Perry Pearn,a head coach in Jacques Martin and now their GM Pierre Gauthier. “When he came in, he just announced his decision and told us where the organization wants to go,” explained Gionta. “Obviously we’re committed to winning and everyone is disappointed in the year. It was a move Molson felt was right.” The Habs have a record of 29-35-14 and sit 28th in the NHL (15th in the East) with a 14.2% chance of grabbing pick number 1 in this summers NHL entry Draft.

CANADIENS OWNER FIRES GM PIERRE GAUTHIER
This afternoon in Montreal, Canadiens owner Geoff Molson announced that he fired GM Pierre Gauthier. The Habs are last in the East with a record of 29-34-14. "It goes without saying that we're all very disappointed in our performance this season," said Molson."Everyone in this organization, including our players, expected better. Our fans care deeply about our team and want nothing more than a winning team, one that follows in the tradition of our storied past. This season did not deliver on those expectations. Our fans can trust that ownership will accept nothing less than a winning culture in this organization.We need to remember that our fans want us to win, period," Molson told reporters at the team's practice facility in Brossard. "Our organizational culture is to support and adopt this passion for victory. Nothing else matters."
Molson and Denis Savard will be the Habs interim Gms until they decide who will take over. Leading candidates for the next GM could be: Pierre Meguire and Patrick Roy.

PANTHERS GRAB A BIG 2 POINTS WITH A 3-2 SHOOTOUT WIN

Last night in Montreal with the Canadiens being officially out of the Playoff race (sitting in 15th in the East with 72 points), the Habs are now spoilers. Going into this game the Panthers (3rd in the East) sat at the top of the Southeast divison with 87 points, just 3 points ahead of the Capitals (who sit in 2nd in the division and 9th in the Conference with 84 points). So it was a big game for the Panthers. Wolski opened the scoring for the Panthers before Eric Cole tied the game on the powerplay just over a minute later. That was Coles career high, 31st goal of the season. Then late in the second, LeBlanc had a breakaway and he scored to make it 2-1 Habs lead.
13 minutes into the third, Samuelsson tied the game with a goal from the point. So this game would go to a shootout. Wolski would score the loan goal in the shootout as the Panthers win 3-2 and are now 5 points ahead of the Capitals."Let's not kid ourselves, I think we're a doing that right now on both sides of the ledger," Dineen said. "Everybody's looking at what's happening around the league."That was a nice win for us. And I give Buffalo credit. That's a team that was counted out three weeks ago and it's amazing the difference."
