GOAL SCORERS

MTL:   A. Emelin (16:56 - 1st) , M. Pacioretty (PPG, 04:17 - 2nd) , B. Gallagher (09:08 - 3rd) , M. Pacioretty (14:26 - 3rd) , B. Gionta (17:34 - 3rd)
TOR:   F. McLaren (13:44 - 1st) , C. MacArthur (15:47 - 2nd)
GOALIES

MTL: C. Price (W)
 TOR: B. Scrivens (L)

Earlier tonight in Toronto, the Habs took on the Leafs for the third time this season. The Leafs won both games in Montreal, out scoring the Habs 8-1. In this game Michael Ryder was making his debut wearing number 73 (a number that was given up by Gallagher for number 11). Throughout the first period, McLaren was looking for someone to fight to give the Leafs a spark... He didn't get a fight but 13 minutes in, McLaren took the puck to the net and scored to make it 1-0 Toronto. With under 3 minutes to go, Armstrong played the puck to Emelin at the point and his slap shot found its way to the back of the net to make it 1-1.

With under a minute to go in the first, Brown hit Gorges from behind and was given a 5 minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct. The shots in the first were 11-4 Montreal. 4 minutes into the second with the Habs still  on the powerplay, Subbans one-timer was stopped and the rebound went off the shines of Pacioretty and in to make it 2-1 Habs. At the half way point of the game, the Habs came in on a 2 on 1 and Desharnais played it over to Gallagher and he was robbed by the blocker of Scrivens.

1 minute later, Grabovski was taken down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Price would make the save. Then with under 4 to go in the second, Frasers shot from the point was stopped but it bounced out of Prices glove. The play continued and Kadri played the puck to McArthur and he scored to tie the game. The shots in the second were 17-8 Habs. 9 minutes into the third, there was a faceoff to the right of the Leafs tender between Desharanais and Bozak. The Habs won the faceoff and Gorges point shot was tipped in by Gallagher to make it 3-2.

Bozak was not ready for the draw and he wasn't impressed with the ref and he let him hear it. Late in the period, Pacioretty came up the right wing and shot a bullet past Scrivens to extend the lead. He looked like the Rocket on that play. Gionta would add an empty net goal from Gionta as the Habs win 5-2. The Habs out shot the Leafs 40 to 23 in the win."The Maple Leafs played two terrific games at the Bell Centre and we knew we had to bounce back from those type of games," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. "We certainly played a great team game and stuck to our plan, and we were controlling our emotion to play that game.

"Right from the get go I thought our guys were ready to play, and we set the tone. They tried to be physical on us but I was not afraid of that. We just kept focusing on the things we had to do to be successful." In the win, Price made 22 saves. In the loss, Scrivens made 35 saves. The Habs dominated the Leafs in every aspect of the game, puck battles, shots, shot blocking and special teams. The Habs only took 1 penalty and the Leafs took a 5 minute major and the Habs made them pay with a goal by Pacioretty.

"We were flat, flat, flat, flat," Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. "It looked like at times that we were playing in our boots and they were playing on skates. We just didn't get anything going for ourselves. I don't think there's any way to paint it pretty and I'm sure you guys will give us a lot of help."

Montreal Canadiens Vs Ottawa Senators - 02/25/2013

HABS TRADE COLE FOR RYDER

This just in, the Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Eric Cole to the Dallas Stars for Michael Ryder and a draft pick. Michael Ryder spent 4 seasons with Montreal (2003-2008) and had 207 points in 314 Regular Season games. Michael Ryder was drafted 2016th overall in 1998 by the Habs. So far this season Ryder has 6 goals and 8 assists in 19 games with the Stars. Michale Ryder is expected to make his Habs debut tomorrow night in Montreal against the Leafs.

Eric Cole spent  just 1 and a half seasons with the Habs (2011-2013). In the 2011-12 season, Eric Cole was the Habs best forward, he had a career high 35 goals and 26 assists in 82 games. But this season hes off to a slow start, in 19 games he has just 3 goals and 3 assists... That was the ultimate reason for the trade along with a few rumors that have been surfacing regarding Coles relationships with his teammates.  "Salut Erik. Gonna miss ya brother," Carey Price said on Twitter.

Earlier tonight in Ottawa,  the Conference and Northeast divison leading Canadiens took on the Ottawa Senators. With a win in regulation, the Sens would be in a tie with the Habs for 1st. There was no score in the first and the shots were 12-5 Habs. 1 minute into the second, Giontas wrap around was stopped by Bishop and the rebound went to Prust who shot the puck wide of the net. At the 7 minute mark of the second, Dziurzynski came up the right wing and took a slap shot and scored to make it 1-0. 3 minutes later, Eric Cole received a pass at the right wing and took a shot and it went off the post.

With under 10 seconds to go in the period, the Habs were on a powerplay. The faceoff was to the right of Bishop,  it was a scramble draw and Pacioretty played it to Diaz who played it over to Markov and his one timer found its way to the back of the net to tie the game. The shots in the second were 18-10 Montreal. Then in the third, the Habs dominated the third by taking shots from anywhere possible, but Bishop stood tall and forced the game to go into overtime.

The shots in the third were 10-8 Habs. No one could find the back of the net in OT so we were off to a shootout. Silfverberg was up first for Ottawa and he scored. Galchenyuk was denied. But on the Habs second shooter, Desharanias faked a shot and then took one and scored to tie the shootout. Regin would score the shootout winner on the Sens 5th attempt to end the game. The Sens win 2-1 and are 1 point back of the Habs for 1st in the East. In the win, Bishop won the game for the Senators by making 44 saves.

In the loss, Price made 23 saves."It was all Bishop," said Senators coach Paul MacLean. "I thought (Montreal) really skated well and really cut us off and didn't give us an opportunity to do very much and Ben was outstanding in the net.For the most part I thought they dominated the rink for most of the game but we would bend and we would bend but we wouldn't break. One of the strengths of our organization right now is goaltending and we've been leaning on it quite a bit."

GOALIES

CAR: C. Ward (L)
 MTL: P. Budaj (W)

Earlier tonight in Montreal, Peter Budaj (making his second straight start) and the Montreal Canadiens were looking for their fourth straight win in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Brandon Gallagher was out with a concussion, so Ryan White is back in the line up for the first time since taking a 2 minute roughing penalty that costs Montreal the game against Buffalo a few weeks back. No score in the first and the shots were 7-5 Montreal. 5 minutes into the second with the Habs on a powerplay, Desharnais centred the puck to Cole and he was stopped by the right pad of Cam Ward.

A few minutes later, Subban came in on a 2 on 1 and he played the puck to Plekanec and he was stopped by Ward. No score score after 2. In the second the shots were 11-8 Montreal. 2 minutes into the third, Gallchenyuk came into the offensive zone and played the puck to Prust and he fired a shot past Ward to make it 1-0. 10 minutes later, Plekanec came up the left wing and slapped a shot past Ward to make it 2-0. 18 seconds later, Pacioretty from 104 feet away from Canes net dumped the puck on goal and it bounced over the glove of Ward to make it 3-0.

That was Paciorettys first goal of the season. The monkeys off his back as the Canadiens win 3-0. " It was pretty important," Pacioretty said. " I have been waiting for bounce. I've had a couple tonight and a couple lately... I have to be better and hopefully this will help me." This win was Montreals 4th straight win and in this win streak the Habs have only allowed 4 goals. In the win, Budaj made 19 saves. In the loss, Ward made 23 saves. Remember last season when Montreal couldn't score? Everyone was saying they need to get a top 5 forward, but it seems like all they needed was a different strategy.

Under Jacques Martin, the Habs were a defensive team that scored 1 goal and sat back. With Michel Therrien, the Habs are a team that uses their speed to get goals and if they are up by 1 they don't sit back, they keep pushing to extend their lead. Thats why Montreal is currently 5th in the league in Goals forward per game.

HABS DOWN THE FLYERS & MOVE UP TO 2ND IN THE EAST

GOAL SCORERS

PHI:   D. Briere (13:56 - 2nd)
MTL:   B. Gallagher (08:53 - 1st) D. Desharnais (01:15 - 2nd) T. Plekanec (04:32 - 3rd) R. Bourque (EN, 18:56 - 3rd)
GOALIES

PHI: B. Boucher (L)
 MTL: P. Budaj (W)

Earlier tonight in Montreal, the Canadiens took on the Philadelphia Flyers. Going into the game, the Flyers had a record of 2-7-1 on the road. Before the game, the Habs announced that Carey Price was out with the flew, so Peter Budaj would make his 3rd start of the season. The Flyers game plan going into the night was to play a physical game. On their first shift they did just that registering 3 hits. But Montreal had other plans, those plans involved using their speed.

9 minutes in, Pacioretty centred the puck to Gallagher and he wristed a shot past Boucher to make it 1-0.  That was the only goal of the period as the Habs out shot the Flyers 12-2.  Just over a minute into the second, Pacioretty came flying down the right wing and took the puck behind the net and centred it to Desharnais and he scored to make it 2-0. Then with under 8 to play in the second, Budaj came out to play the puck in behind his own net and he gave it right to Couturier and he had a empty net, but Subban dove to block the shot.

A few minutes later, Briere got the puck in the slot and ripped it past Budaj to cut the lead to 1 on just the Flyers 7th shot of the game. 2-1 after 2 was the score and the shots in the second were 8-6 Flyers. 4 minutes into the third, Bourque centred the puck to Plekanec and his shot was blocked and he got his own rebound and scored to make it 3-1. Late in the period, Schenn nailed Gallagher into the boards and he left the game and didn't return. Shortly after, Timonen sent Pacioretty into the net and he left the game as well and didn't return.

Bourque would add an empty net goal as the Habs win 4-1. The shots in the third were 11-9 Montreal and 29-19 overall. In the win Budaj made 18 saves. In the loss Boucher made 26 saves. After Montreals 6-0 loss to the Leafs last Saturday, most people wonder if Montreal could ever get back to their winning ways and they have as they currently hold a 3 game win streak."I thought the way we handled that game, with (Erik) Cole getting the guys together, guys talking and coming back to work the right way. ... You can lick your wounds and feel sorry for yourselves and point fingers, but instead of doing that we decided to look in the mirror, and be accountable and get better," Gorges said. "We had a good week."

The Montreal Canadiens now hold a 1 point lead over the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2nd in the Eastern Conference. If the Habs plan on being a top team all they have to do is continue to do what they do best and that's to use their speed. Montreal is one of the fastest teams in the NHL and if they are going to win hockey games they must use their speed going up the wings and get the puck to the slot and drive the net for rebounds. That's Montreals style and if they play like that they will no doubt win hockey games.

Last night in Sunrise, Florida, the Canadiens finished their two game road trip with a battle against the Panthers.  Montreal dominated the first period with the shots being 11-6, but they couldn't beat Theodore. In the second there was a lot of back and forth play, but both Carey Price and Jose Theodore closed the door as their was no score. The shots were 10-7 Montreal in the second. Then in the third, neither team could beat the opposing goaltender as once again there was no score after 3. The shots in the third were 13-9 Panthers.2 minutes into the overtime period, Galchenyuk came up the left wing and took a shot and it was stopped and the rebound went 1 foot off the ice and Bourque knocked it home for the win as the Habs win 1-0.       "He's excellent," Therrien said. "We lost a little bit of momentum on two shifts and that's when you need your goalie and Carey was phenomenal." In the loss, Theodore made 31 saves."It was a tough game for us. We got outworked for a stretch and we finally decided to start playing a simple game and things fell in from there, but obviously not enough to bring it home," Florida coach Kevin Dineen said.  TBL: A. Lindback (L)

Last night in Tampa Bay, both the Habs and Lightning found themselves in losing streaks, the Habs with 3 straight losses and the Lightning with 4 losses in a row. Now the two struggling teams would faceoff against each other in a attempt to break their drought.  Throughout the first period the Canadiens dominated the Lightning. They were taking shots from everywhere, but they couldn't beat Lindback. Linback was playing like former Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, diving to make saves, lying the ice to stop the puck and it looked like Montreal wouldn't be able to score.

But late in the first, with the Habs on a 5 on 3 powerplay, Plekeanec centred the puck to Gionta and he scored to give Montreal the lead. 8 minutes into the second, Subbans point shot found its way to the back of the net to make it 2-0. Late in the second,  Eller centred the puck to Moen and he scored to make it 3-0 after 2. Game over right? Theres no way Montreal can blow a 3-0 lead. The Lightning weren't planning on giving up. With under 6 to play, Pyatt centred the puck to Hedman and he scored to cut the lead to 2.

Then with under 2 minutes to play, Purcell centred the puck to Hedman and it went off his leg and in to cut the lead to 1. With 47 seconds to go, powerplay for the Lightning with the net empty, Salos point shot deflected off Gorges and in to tie the game. This game would go to a shootout. Desharnais was the second shooter for Montreal and he scored five hole to make it 1-0. Stamkos had to score to keep it alive and he was stopped by Price and the Habs win 4-3.  In the win, Price made 21 saves. In the loss, Lindback made 31 saves.

The Habs blew a 3-0 lead with 6 minutes to go but still found a way to win. "You know what? We came to win this hockey game, and this is what we did," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. "And we were almost perfect for 54 minutes. We opened the door. We will learn from it."

GOALIES

BOS: T. Rask (W)
 MTL: C. Price (L)

Last night in Montreal, bitter rivals, the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens took the ice. There was no score after 1 period but Montreal was dominating. They had a few rushes from the side boards and a couple of breakaways from Eller and Plekanec but they were all turned away by Rask as he stopped 11shots in the first. Then 11 minutes into the second with the Habs on a powerplay, Markov played the puck to Subban and he ripped a rocket past Rask to make it 1-0. That was the score after 2. In the third the Bruins came out looking for nothing less than a win.

14 seconds into the final frame, Krejci centred the puck to Seguin and he backhanded a shot past Price to tie the game. 2 minutes later,Lucic came up the left wing and he centred the puck to Krejci and he scored to give Boston the lead.  The Bruins dominated the first half of the third as the Canadiens couldn't get the puck. Towards the end of the period Cole centred the puck to Desharnais and he tipped the puck between the legs of Rask and past the post. Thats as close as the Habs would get as they fall to the Bruins 2-1 is the final.

"We played well in the first period, but starting in the second we kind of backed up," said defenseman Andrei Markov, who picked up his ninth point in nine games. "We stopped playing our game."

Silfverberg Goaltender Interference. (Ottawa Senators vs Montreal Canadi...

GOALIE INTERFERENCE CALL LEADS HABS TO A 2-1 WIN AGAINST THE SENS

GOAL SCORERS

OTT:   J. Silfverberg (PPG, 01:38 - 1st)
MTL:   D. Desharnais (02:13 - 1st) , E. Cole (11:29 - 1st)
GOALIES

OTT: C. Anderson (L)
 MTL: C. Price (W)

Earlier this afternoon in Montreal, the Habs took on the Sens in search of their 6th win of the season. 1:38 with the Sens on a powerplay, Silfverberg had a breakaway and he scored glove side on Price to make it 1-0.  Just over 30 seconds later, Paciorettys shot from the right wing was tipped in by Desharnias to tie the game. 9 minutes later, just as the Habs powerplay expires, Bouillions point shot was stopped but the rebound was put home by Cole to give Montreal the lead. 2-1 Montreal would be the score after 2.

2 minutes into the third, Benoits point shot beat Carey Price to tie the game. But the refs waved it off for Goaltender interference on Silfverberg. So the Habs still hold the lead. I didn't like this call one bit. Carey Price was out on the white ice in front of the blue paint and he bumbed into Silfverberg and the puck found its way in. No goal? Thats a horrible call, the Senators forward did nothing but battle for position in front and was called for interference. The question is why would the refs call this a penalty? Price shouldn't have been on the white ice in the first place. Bad call and it costs the Sens the game as Montreal held on for a 2-1 win.

The refs have been making some bad calls this season, but in my opinion their worst calls are the Goalie interference calls. What happens if the Senators end up missing the playoffs by 1 point? They will look back at this game against Montreal and feel that this call took them out of the playoffs."We thought we had tied the game and they waived it off," said Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson. "We didn't think it should have been waived off but that's the way it goes.We still had some good chances after that. It wasn't to be."
In the win, Price made 32 saves. In the loss, Anderson made 30 saves.

This past afternoon in Montreal, the Habs were looking to rebound after a 5-1 loss to Senators with a win against the Buffalo Sabres.
