A NEW CAPTAIN IN MONTREAL?
Today in Montreal, Canadiens Gm Pierre Gauthier announced that there will be a captain in Montreal by the Habs first regular season game."There will be a captain before the season starts," Gauthier said. "There has been a process developing an identity for the club last season and the further we advanced (in the playoffs), the more people stepped in - it wasn't just a select group of players. We're going to get the end of the process before the start of the first (regular season) game." But now the question is who will it be. According to sources the contenders to be the Habs next captain are Brian Gionta, Mike Cammalleri and Andrei Markov (who turned down the captaincy request last season). The last time Montreal had a captain was in the 08-09 season his name was Saku Koivu who currently plays for the Anaheim Ducks.
Koivu was the Habs captain for 9 seasons (2000-2009 the Habs second longest captain), and he spent a total of 14 seasons with Montreal. He had 191 goals and 450 assist in 792 games with Montreal. But back on the subject of the Habs NEW CAPTAIN, I believe a captain in Montreal will help them succeed in the Playoffs based on the Habs leadership from the Captains in the past. Anyway, Habs Gm Pierre Gauthier didn't only talk about leadership but he talked about the Habs future which he believes is going to be a great one."Last year's process developed an identity for our club," he told reporters. "We felt stability was going to be important. We wanted to solidify and keep our core of players. We have a better knowledge of who we are and what we can accomplish."
